Writers Words:If you tell the reader that Bull Beezley is a brutal-faced, loose-lipped bully, with snake’s blood in his veins, the reader’s reaction may be, ‘Oh, yeah!’ But if you show the reader Bull Beezley raking the bloodied flanks of his weary, sweat-encrusted pony, and flogging the tottering, red-eyed animal with a quirt, or have him booting in the protruding ribs of a starved mongrel and, boy, the reader believes!” —Fred East, June 1944

EAST MEETS WEST IN THE VORTEX

It was my fourteenth trip to the Valley of the Sun—Phoenix, Arizona.  The first trip, so many, many years ago was to spend time with family members as this one was also. During the many forays West, I flew the Grand Canyon in a helicopter, embarked on a car trip across the desert to Las Vegas staring at miles and miles of brown, barren land dotted with multiple cacti–not even one “Golden Arch” to break the desolate, monotonous landscape. I attended my daughter’s college graduation from Arizona State University, visited a copper mine in Bisbee, Arizona staying overnight at a hotel room two doors down from the door that stated, “John Wayne slept here.” I passed the tombstones of outlaws buried in a Tucson cemetery and brought home a Native American sand painting that I still treasure today.  However, during this last trip in December 2013, I spiraled into the Red Rock vortex in Sedona, Arizona.

I didn’t know what the Sedona vortexes were until I found myself in one. But what is a vortex? A vortex is the funnel shape created by a whirling fluid or by the motion of spiraling energy. Familiar examples of vortex shapes are whirlwinds, tornadoes, and water going down the drain. A vortex can be made up of anything that flows, such as wind, water, or electricity. Sedona has long been known as a spiritual power center because of the vortexes of subtle energy coming out from the surface of the earth. This energy is not exactly electricity or magnetism, although it does leave a slight measurable residual magnetism in the places where it is strongest. The four main energy vortexes in Sedona are Boynton Canyon, Red Rock Crossing Cathedral Rock, Bell rock and Airport. The subtle energy that exists at these locations interacts with who a person is inside. It resonates and strengthens the Inner Being of each person that comes within a quarter mile of it. The resonance occurs because the vortex energy is very similar to the subtle energy operating in the energy centers inside each person.  Energy absorbed in this way can have a positive effect for days afterward. People come from all over the world to experience this.

I experienced quietude, an almost noiseless environment despite a large resort filled with people and cars driving by on a nearby highway. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility while immersed within those Red Rocks, a special oasis from the congestion of everyday life. I felt a relaxation of body and a flow of ideas into a mind that became suddenly uncluttered. I thought…. If only the vortex energy at Sedona could be harnessed and transported home in a jar– I’d inhale a good whiff of its energy every time I sit down to write.
